Coursera courses for mainstream teachers of ESL students
This page contains links to very brief summaries of the salient points in each of the six units of two excellent Coursera online courses for mainstream
teachers of ESL
students. Also included with the summaries are links to further information on the same topics.
Course 1: Lesson Planning with the ELL in Mind [ Go to course ]
This module focuses on various issues
concerning how students learn subject content through their second language.
This module focuses on points to consider during the
pre-planning stages of lesson design with ESL students in mind.
The third week focuses on identifying content and
language outcomes so that suitable activities can be planned for upcoming lessons.
This module focuses on creating or selecting (and
adapting) suitable materials for ESL students to achieve the intended learning outcomes.
This module looks at annotated lesson plans from three
subjects: social studies, language arts and mathematics. It demonstrates how the principles
outlined in previous modules can be put into practice.
This module gives course participants the opportunity to
review previous units and take a final assessment.
Course 2: Assessing Achievement with the ELL in Mind [ Go to course ]
This module focuses on the purpose of assessment in
general and the challenges of assessing ESL students in particular. It also differentiates
learning objectives from language objectives, and provides an overview of the key concepts in authentic
assessment.
This module is a detailed discussion, with examples, of
the two main assessment types (formative and summative) and how they relate to each other.
The third week looks at various types of alternative
assessment and then explains ways in which assessments aimed at English-proficient students can
be modified to be manageable by ESL students.
This module discusses peer and self-assessment, as well
as the use of rubrics in the fair and reliable assessment of ESL student progress. The third
main area of focus is on language error correction strategies.
This module focuses on the benefits of project-based
learning for all students, and on appropriate assessments for this curricular model. There is
also a brief discussion of scaffolding assessments to ensure their manageability for ESL
students.
This module gives course participants the opportunity to
review previous units and take a final assessment.
Note 1: The brief key point summaries in the linked pages above are based on the courses as
provided by Coursera in 2015. The courses may have been updated in the meantime, but the information and
advice I give remains entirely relevant.
Note 2: The Coursera courses refer to non-native English speakers in English-medium
schools as ELLs (English language learners). For consistency across the rest of this International
School Tutors site I have used the acronym ESL (English as a second language) in the
course summaries and supplementary information. [ More ]
