Writing and adding word sets

This page has essential information about how to write word sets and add them to the word groups you create.

Terminology

A word group is a collection of word sets on a particular topic such as Animals.

A word set is one entry in the word group. Each word group can have many word sets.

Word set items

Each word set consists of four items:

* The word and definition or translation are required in each word set. The example sentence and extra information are optional.

Note that the app was not designed for the acquisition of general subject knowledge. [But read this More: As long as the answer is a single word or phrase, it is possible to replace the definition/translation item with a question. For example, Question: What is the modality that is associated with the expression of possibility (for example 'may' in 'You may be right')? - Word (answer) = epistemic

You are recommended to write the word sets in an external app so that you can easily keep a back-up copy.

Word set items: Requirements and restrictions

Each of the word set items (word/definition or translation/example sentence/extra information) needs to follow a set of rules. If this is not the case, the word set will not be added to the word group.

Maximum lengths

To ensure a sensible experience when browsing, updating or quizzing yourself on the words, there is a limit to the number of characters you can have in each field.

Disallowed characters

The red characters below are reserved for the operation of the app. These cannot be used in the word set fields.

Watch a video explanation (3.46) of the requirements and restrictions.

Adding HTML tags

If you know html you can format text and insert links to web pages and images.

Important 1: If you add a or img tags, you must surround the attributes with apostrophes not double quotes

For example, it needs to be:

LINK: <a target='_blank' title='home page' href='https://www.internationalschooltutors.de/index.html'>Home Page</a>

IMAGE: <img src='apple.jpg' height='100' width='200'>

Important 2: This functionality is restricted to the Extra Information field.

Adding word sets

There are two ways to add word sets to the word group:

The one-by-one adding process is self-explanatory in the Update tab. Note: Even if you use this method it is a good idea to write the word sets elsewhere and then copy the items into the input boxes. In this way you have a backup file and will not have to rewrite the entries if the Add Word Set process fails for any reason.

The multiple import is more complex and will fail if these steps are not followed:

Note: The import will fail if the word sets do not follow the requirements and restrictions listed above.

Watch a video explanation (3.32) for an alternative way to understand this process.

A final reminder: If you use the Add Word Sets method in the Update tab, it is a good idea to write write the word sets first in another app so that you can keep a running backup.
